What is English Language Support?
English Language Support is teaching that helps learners develop and use English for the purposes that matter to them.
It can support the development of spoken and written English, including reading, listening, speaking, writing, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and communication.
The work begins with the learner’s current use of English and the contexts in which they need to use it. Lessons are then shaped around what they need to understand, communicate, or do more effectively.
The Studio works with children, young people, and adults, including learners developing English for education, everyday communication, or work and professional purposes.

How Lessons Are Shaped
There is no single lesson structure for English Language Support. Lessons are organised around the learner’s purpose and the English they need to use.
A lesson might involve:
Reading and Understanding
Working with a literary text, article, academic text, or other material.
Speaking and Listening
Developing conversation, fluency, comprehension, pronunciation, or communication.
Writing and Expression
Working on sentences, emails, essays, reports, applications, or other forms of writing.
Vocabulary and Grammar
Developing the language needed to communicate more accurately and precisely.
Practical Communication
Rehearsing situations the learner encounters in education, everyday life, or work.
Following Learning and Development
Learning is observed throughout the programme and used to shape what happens next.
Starting Point
Before the programme begins
We establish what the learner can already understand and do in English and identify areas that may need attention.
Learning & Development
Throughout the 12 weeks
We observe development through the learner’s reading, writing, speaking, listening, and use of English in different contexts.
Progress
As learning develops
We consider what is becoming more secure, what is developing, and where further teaching or practice is needed.
Next Steps
At the end of the 12 weeks
We use what we have learned about the learner to determine what to continue, strengthen, extend, or introduce next.
Questions you may have
How do you determine what I need to work on?
The Studio begins by considering your current use of English, your goals, and the situations in which you need to communicate. This helps determine an appropriate starting point and areas of focus.
Do I need to follow a particular curriculum?
No. English Language Support is not tied to a single national curriculum. Where appropriate, teaching can incorporate school, university, examination, workplace, or other specific requirements.
Can lessons focus on a particular need?
Yes. Lessons can be organised around a particular need, such as writing, speaking, pronunciation, grammar, reading, academic English, or professional communication.
What materials will I need?
The Studio provides the materials required for lessons. Where appropriate, teaching may also draw on materials connected to the learner’s own educational, personal, or professional context.
How are lessons delivered?
Lessons are delivered one-to-one online through video conferencing. Digital materials and independent activities may also be shared through the Studio’s online learning environment where appropriate.
